Approximately 2000 apartment burglaries have been registered in year 2006. The police inform that in 60% of the cases the apartments are robbed at random by drug addicts, which is why it is so important to look after the security of your property and not leave anything to chance.
Burglars who rob at random pay special attention to windows that have been carelessly left half-open, unlocked doors and locks that can be easily forced open.
Because of that:
- lock the door, even if you are going out for only 3 minutes to get something from the car or take out the trash – it is enough time for a burglar, who has wandered into your stairway by chance, to grab some valuable item from your apartment
- if the apartment has double doors lock them both not only when leaving the apartment, but also overnight
- carefully shut your windows before leaving the apartment and overnight
- pay special attention to the security of windows if your apartment is located on the ground floor or near a fire escape
- install the best locks possible, which take more time to force open – it is possible, that just that will prevent a burglar from braking into your home.
- make sure that the door to your stairway is also closed and locked – it is the first obstacle, which can prevent the casual thief from entering the building
- ask your buildings manager to install a code key or a secure lock on the street door
- additionally to the above mentioned precautions, install an alarm system in your apartment – even if the burglar manages to overcome the lock, the alarm signal can scare him away and prevent your apartment from being robbed.
